The story of the Nantucket begins not with the watch, but with a walk along the Normandy coast. In 1937, Robert Dumas strolled along the shore, watching boats at anchor. It was the chains holding them in place that caught his eye and sparked an idea.
The following year, Dumas brought his vision to life in. The result was the Chaîne d'ancre: a bracelet of interlocking figure-eight links that embodied, as Hermès would later put it, the harmony between practicality and beauty. From the 1950s through the 1960s, the motif expanded into rings, necklaces, and earrings, and over time wove itself into scarves, leather goods, and the broader visual language of the Maison.
In 1991, Henri d'Origny — the same iconoclastic designer behind the Arceau and the Cape Cod — boldly sketched the outlines of the Nantucket watch as a companion to those earlier models. Its defining gesture was architectural: a "rectangle within a rectangle," a case whose form was itself an echo of the Chaîne d'ancre links it was designed to sit alongside.
